Nigeria Just Took Its First Hot-Air Balloon Flight
On October 1, the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), in collaboration with SkyTrek Balloon, successfully test-flew what it described as Nigeria’s first hot-air balloon in Abuja.
The flight marks a new addition to Nigeria’s growing tourism and leisure scene, offering a different way to experience the capital’s landscape from above. And Abuja is a fitting place to begin. Known for its hills, expansive green spaces and landmarks like Aso Rock, the city offers a striking landscape that looks very different from the air.
The project has been in development for some time. NASRDA has been working with SkyTrek on the initiative while navigating aviation regulations, safety requirements and technical preparations. The partnership is also expected to create opportunities for training and technical expertise around balloon aviation in Nigeria. For now, however, the October flight was a test rather than the full launch of commercial passenger rides. SkyTrek says its balloon experience is coming soon, with Abuja and Lagos planned as its first destinations.
When it launches, the company plans to offer shared and private flights, including sunrise and sunset experiences, as well as packages for celebrations and corporate events. Beyond the novelty, the project points to a broader shift in how Nigerians experience their own country. As more tourism operators move towards experiences rather than traditional sightseeing, attractions like hot-air ballooning could give both locals and international visitors new reasons to explore Nigeria.
