Christian Mbilli: The Promise Behind His WBC Title
Cameroonian-born French-Canadian, Christian Mbilli, defends his WBC super-middleweight title against Canelo Álvarez on October 31. He has come a long way from his childhood in Yaoundé, Cameroon, where he and his mother struggled to survive. Now, as he prepares for the biggest test of his career, the championship carries the weight of a promise he made to her.
The Early Years
Mbilli was born in Yaoundé in 1995. His mother, Marie Thérèse, had him as a teenager and struggled to make ends meet. Her struggles and sacrifices have always been a source of inspiration to Mbilli through his boxing career.
According to an article published by Punching Grace, Mbilli said this about his mother:
“Resilience is part of my roots, and she transmitted it to me in her womb because she had to be very strong to give birth to me in that situation.”
During his formative years, his mother married a French citizen and moved to France, while he stayed with relatives while she arranged the necessary paperwork for him to join her. He eventually joined her at age 11.
How Bullying Led Christian Mbilli to Boxing
Growing up in France, Mbilli experienced bullying and learned to stand his ground. When he arrived in the country, he already had an impressive build and became the target of locals who wanted to prove themselves. Soccer initially held his interest as a pastime with friends, but a school supervisor invited him to try boxing at 15. He accepted as a way to improve his defence, then fell in love with the sport.
His mother was less than pleased with his switch from soccer to boxing. Mbilli said that, after all the struggles and sacrifices his mother had made for him, it was difficult for her to watch him get hurt. However, he quickly established himself as a promising amateur boxer. He won the European Junior Championship in 2013 and the European Union title in 2014. In 2016, he represented France at the Rio Olympics, reaching the quarter-finals.
Mbilli Moves to Canada to Pursue a Professional Career
In 2017, Mbilli moved to Montreal to begin his professional career. He worked with trainer Marc Ramsay and developed the aggressive style that would define his rise through the super-middleweight division.
Competing at 168 pounds, Mbilli built a reputation for pressure, power and relentless forward movement. His record stands at 29 wins, no losses and one draw, with 24 victories by knockout.
Winning the Interim WBC Super-Middleweight Title
In June 2025, Mbilli claimed the interim WBC super-middleweight title with a first-round stoppage of Maciej Sulecki. He later defended his title against Lester Martínez in September 2025, with their contest ending in a draw.

The Promise Behind His WBC Title
Mbilli’s status changed in January 2026 when the WBC elevated him to full champion after Terence Crawford vacated the title. His promotion was announced at the weekly Martes a Café press conference. Mbilli had only priority following the announcement: to phone his mother with the news. The World Boxing Council (WBC) reported that he immediately called her to share the momentous news.
According to Samuel Décarie-Drolet, Christian Mbilli’s assistant coach, “He had promised his mother that he would become world champion, and he was able to do it, but he also wanted to make a lot of money so he could take care of her,”
Sadly, she passed away in July 2026 after battling cancer.
Behind Mbilli’s achievements lies his mother’s sacrifice and the promise he made to her. Her death gave that commitment even greater significance. Becoming world champion brought him closer to fulfilling what he had promised her.
