Nigerian-Born Striker Max Iheanachor Becomes First African Part Of NFL Draft

Max Iheanachor has been selected in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, landing as both a sporting milestone and a cultural flashpoint. The pick, announced on draft night by former Steelers legend Jerome Bettis, raised eyebrows in the moment but quickly revealed itself as a calculated decision.

Steelers leadership pointed to Iheanachor’s rapid development as a key factor.
“He’s just getting started,” said general manager Omar Khan. “He hasn’t played a lot of football in his life, and he’s only going to get better.”

Head coach Mike McCarthy echoed that sentiment in an interview with Steelers Now, highlighting the technical traits that set him apart:
“When you watch linemen play, you want to see them strike and stick. With that comes balance and footwork. His ability to stay alive on second and third reaction when he engages, it’s all over the tape.”

Iheanachor’s standout performances during the Senior Bowl were reportedly a turning point, elevating him firmly into first-round consideration during internal draft meetings.

The 22-year-old, who stands at 6’6” and weighs 321 lbs, fills a critical need on the Steelers’ offensive line — an area the franchise has been looking to reinforce amid injury concerns and roster gaps.

Before the draft, Iheanachor built his profile at the Arizona State Sun Devils football, where he appeared in 32 games, primarily at right tackle.

Elsewhere in the NFL, a few other Nigerian-linked names are emerging. Tyler Onyedim, who has Nigerian heritage, was also drafted by the Denver Broncos. Several Nigerian athletes are also part of the league’s growing international pipeline via the NFL’s International Player Pathway Programme, including Uar Bernard, who is one of the most talked-about defensive tackle prospects in the class, as well as Collins Arogunjo, Michael Daramola, Chibuike Madu and Anjola Oketola.
