Fela Kuti to Be Inducted Into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Fela Kuti will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year, making him the first African solo artist to receive the honor.

The Nigerian icon will receive the Early Influence Award at the Peacock Theater on November 14, a moment that places African music on one of the industry’s biggest stages.

Fela Kuti’s Legacy

Kuti’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction follows a year of major recognition for his legacy. In January, the Recording Academy awarded him a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award, which his children, Femi, Yeni, Kunle, and Shalewa Kuti, accepted at the Special Merit Awards Ceremony.

In addition, his 1976 album Zombie entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2025, becoming the first Nigerian album to receive that recognition.

2026 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Honorees

The 2026 inductees were announced on April 13, with the list spanning several categories, including Performers, Early Influence Award recipients, Musical Excellence honorees, and the Ahmet Ertegun Award. Other Early Influence honorees include Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Gram Parsons, and Celia Cruz.

Sade Adu was also recognized in the Performer category, adding another African presence to the lineup.

Fela Kuti’s Journey

The Hall describes Kuti as a revolutionary artist who blended jazz, West African rhythms, and soul to create Afrobeat while using music to challenge political power and social injustice.

He formed Koola Lobitos in 1959 while he was a student in London, and later developed Afrobeat after exposure to Black American music and activism, with his sound shaped by jazz, funk, and civil rights influences.

Despite arrests and criticism during his lifetime, his influence never faded. The Hall continues to highlight his lasting impact on global music and culture, and today his work still shapes artists across generations.

Other members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2026 class include Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, Sade, Luther Vandross, Wu-Tang Clan, Celia Cruz, Queen Latifah, and MC Lyte.
