SNL UK Just Did A Sketch Of Wicked With Cynthia Erivo That Spoofs Old Nollywood Classics

Saturday Night Live UK has given Wicked a distinctly Nigerian twist in their latest episode, where they reimagine the hit musical as a classic Nollywood production complete with dramatic voice-overs, outrageous dialogue and an unexpected romantic moment.

For this weekend’s episode, host Cynthia Erivo returned to the world of Wicked for a parody titled Nigerian Wicked, set in a fictional LagOZ (Get it? Lagos, but it is also OZ). Erivo plays Glinda opposite Ayoade Bamgboye’s Elphaba as the unlikely duo embark on a journey to meet the Wizard in the Emerald, White and Emerald City (also a nod to Nigeria’s Green, White, Green flag!), hoping to get their wishes granted. Glinda wants a Birkin, while Elphaba dreams of a skinny BBL that defies gravity.

The sketch takes its cues from the melodrama and exaggerated storytelling of old Nollywood films. In one scene, the pair launch into a reimagining of “What Is This Feeling?”, the song in which Glinda and Elphaba express their mutual disdain. But instead of launching into a musical number, Glinda asks, “What is that smell?” Elphaba replies, “It’s egg,” prompting a very Nigerian announcer voice-over to explain: “Glinda doesn’t like egg, so their relationship is very strained.”

When they finally meet the Wizard, the encounter becomes another battle of wits, calling his fake Rolex a ‘Nolex’ only for the pair to discover that he is broke. It is the kind of absurd plot twist that would feel right at home in a classic Nollywood film.

The sketch closes with an almost-kiss between Erivo and Bamgboye, followed by the declaration “Nigerian Wicked: LGBTQ!” It is a fittingly chaotic ending to a parody that brings together the fantastical world of Wicked and the over-the-top-ness of old Nollywood.
