Darryl Vega’s humor is as deadpan as it comes. Its dryness is insanely distracting. Scrolling through Instagram and coming across a clip of Vega being interviewed or interviewing a subject, it’s easy to be confused about whether to take him seriously. But according to Vega himself, he is as serious as they come. He’s just also really entertaining to watch.

“People don’t take me seriously but I’m a very serious person. That’s why I come across like that,” Darryl Vega tells Amplify Africa.

This has followed Vega for years. In fact, the comedian tells Amplify Africa that some of his comedic material comes from finding random things annoying, reporting on them and realizing that people like it. This was especially the case in his previous job as a recruiter. “I used to also work as a recruiter and one of the annoyances of my job was when people would send 5 page resumes with their application,” Vega tells Amplify Africa. “Most resumes can fit on one or two pages, so I made fun of that in a video. People liked it. The third video went viral – four years later, I’m still discovering things that annoy me.”

Born in Nigeria, Vega moved to the United States to further his studies and, in time, his observations about immigrant life, including culture clashes, confusion and the deadpan Nigerian reaction to Western conventions, would become a foundation for his comedic voice and brand.

Vega has since become one of the most identifiable comedy creators, with his knack for interviews leading to him working on the set of Hulu’s Reasonable Doubt, where he interviewed its cast, and interviewing actor and fellow comedian Yvonne Orji for the Netflix movie The Wrong Paris. He was also named as part of BET’s Culture Class of 2025.

Yet Vega doesn’t care much about the potential virality of his jokes.

“Honestly I don’t care too much about the outcome. I mostly focus on the attempt. If an idea makes me laugh, that’s the only requirement – how it performs is of no consequence.”

There is a certain honesty that makes him as endearing as it does entertaining and hilarious. It shows even when we ask him about his daily routine. He calmly responds:

“Wake up between 5 & 6am, depending on the severity of the problem I’m dealing with that week. Then I spend the rest of the day trying and failing to figure out. By then, it’s almost midnight, so I take a break & I resume tomorrow.”

Now, Vega is about to go on tour, with stops across the United States and internationally. When I ask Vega what a Darryl Vega live show would look like to people who are used to seeing him on social media, he answers in his trademark deadpan way.

“I don’t know. It looks like me standing on stage, because it’s live… with a microphone in my hand… talking. What about? Who knows?!!”

Vega then goes on to share:

“No two shows will be the same. I don’t always know what I’m going to do OR say next. I get confused sometimes. We can all be confused together but I’ll try to make sense.”

What we do know, however, is that the tour is set to start on October 2nd in Houston and end in Toronto, Canada, on October 31st. Along the way, Darryl will make stops in Dallas, LA, DC and London.
