Having made a striking entrance with her hit single “Water,” Tyla solidifies her presence in the music scene with her debut album, TYLA.
On this self-titled project, the South African singer seamlessly blends elements of R&B, rap, and pop with the infectious sounds of amapiano, creating a captivating and unforgettable debut.
Speaking to Apple Music about the creation of TYLA, the 22-year-old songstress shared insights into her personal journey over the three years it took to craft the album. “I’m speaking about the things that I’ve gone through while creating the album – basically three years in the making,” she explained. “I was becoming a woman. So it was a lot of growing up that happened, and me realizing my worth and realizing how I want to be treated – and how basically, I’m that girl, and people need to know I’m that girl.”
For Tyla, maintaining authenticity to her African roots was paramount in crafting the 14-track album. “Since I started experimenting with amapiano, it’s really helped me get to this point where I created something that is fresh and new, but still familiar and comes from home,” she emphasized. “Even though I am mixing amapiano with pop and R&B, I didn’t want it to sound watered down. Music is our everything in Africa – the way we speak, the way we dance. It’s just in us. It’s our essence.”
The album features collaborations with acclaimed artists such as Tems, Gunna, Kelvin Momo, Skillibeng, Becky G, and Travis Scott, who joins Tyla on the steamy remix of “Water.”
