The verdant landscape of Biakato in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) belies the turmoil that has gripped the region for decades. Ituri, known for its fertile lands and ideal coffee-growing conditions, has been plagued by interethnic conflicts, land disputes, and violence, leading to a devastating impact on local agriculture.

Historically, DRC’s eastern provinces, including Ituri, were renowned for their high-quality coffee. In the past 40 years, the region has lost nearly 75 percent of its coffee production due to the violence and instability that have led to mass displacements and disruptions in farming activities. This loss has hit women coffee farmers particularly hard.
