Idris Elba, the renowned British actor, has unveiled ambitious plans for Ghana and Sierra Leone, his parents’ native countries. In an interview with CNN, Elba disclosed his vision to construct a “smart eco-city” on Sherbro Island, situated near Sierra Leone in West Africa. This eco-friendly city aims to harness wind and solar power to provide sustainable energy for its residents while simultaneously boosting tourism appeal.

Elba revealed that the idea was initially proposed seven years ago by his business partner, Siaka Stevens, the grandson of a former Sierra Leonean president. What began as a tourism venture has evolved into a broader initiative to develop a dynamic, eco-conscious urban center.

Sherbro Island, with its 19 miles of pristine beachfront, is currently home to approximately 40,000 people and is renowned for its green sea turtles. However, it also bears historical significance as a pivotal site in the transatlantic slave trade era. Elba emphasized the island’s rich heritage, noting the remnants of England’s colonial presence, including Bonthe, once Sierra Leone’s capital city.

Despite his flourishing career in the entertainment industry, Elba remains deeply connected to his African roots. He has assembled a capable team to realize his vision for Sierra Leone, viewing the country as a land of immense potential despite its economic challenges.

Elba stressed the importance of preserving the island’s natural beauty while attracting international investment and catering to Africa’s youthful demographic. He envisions Sherbro Island as a blueprint for sustainable development, underscoring his commitment to environmental consciousness and youth empowerment.

Furthermore, Elba highlighted Africa’s burgeoning creative industries and the need for governmental support to foster their growth. Reflecting on his own acting career, he expressed gratitude for his breakthrough role in “The Wire” but admitted to not revisiting the series due to its personal significance.

Despite facing adversity, including periods of homelessness, Elba’s journey has been transformative. He remains dedicated to both his craft and his heritage, splitting his time between the U.S. and England while advocating for Africa’s cultural and economic advancement.
