Nigeria’s Rafiatu Lawal Breaks Commonwealth Games Record to Win Gold

Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal won gold in the women’s 58kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after producing a record-breaking performance in Glasgow.

Lawal lifted 104kg in the snatch to set new Commonwealth Games and overall Commonwealth records before finishing with a combined total of 233kg to comfortably secure the gold medal.

The victory marks another major milestone in the Nigerian weightlifter’s career, having previously won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. It also continues her impressive run on the international stage, where she has established herself as one of Nigeria’s most consistent medal contenders.

Canada’s Ann-Sophie Bettez claimed silver, while India’s Bindyarani Devi took bronze.

Lawal’s triumph was part of a successful outing for Team Nigeria, with fellow weightlifters Edidiong Umoafia and Onome Didih also winning gold medals to boost the country’s medal haul.
